The Difficulty of Living Your Values

Everyone has values that they set for themselves as a guiding star for where they want to go and what type of person they want to become. Those values and ideals serve as a regulator for our day-to-day life and the choices we make. However, like most things, our ability to stick to those values is neither permanent nor perfect. What I mean is that we constantly get tested in life with difficult situations. They show us whether or not we truly live by our own values and standards. Will you remain truthful if the truth could end a friendship? Will you do the brave thing when you're shivering with fear? Will you have a growth mindset when anger blinds you? All of those examples are where the difficulty of living your values lies.

Will you remain truthful if the truth could end a friendship? Will you do the brave thing when you're shivering with fear?

The reality is that we won't always be able to live up to our values. No one is perfect. The key here is accepting the current reality. Don't get frustrated with how things were in the past or with what things could have been now if that one thing hadn't happened. Just accept the present. This is the first step toward growth and improvement. Be honest with yourself about all of your flaws and mistakes. I know it won't be pleasant, but you owe yourself the truth.

Once you've accepted reality, you have the power to change. Begin building systems and routines that will help you change for the better. Remember that change happens over time, and it is based on the inputs you provide and the consistency you bring. Focus on the process and focus on improvement. Perfection does not exist.
